  • The Reviving the Islamic Spirit Conference held in Toronto from January 2nd, 2004 to January 4th, 2004 brought together 10,000 participants from across North America. The conference included a wide array of local and international Islamic scholars as well as activists and politicians who engaged in dialogue around the issues of Canadian-Muslim identity and the meaning of active citizenship. It was the largest such conference to be held in Canada.

Speakers called for participants to be self-critical; to remove barriers that impeded access of youth and women in community organisations; to remember that there is no place for any type of racism and hatred in Islam and that the duty of Muslims is to reach out and serve the society. They also called for Muslims to stand up and speak out on issues such as security and immigration.
