  • The two-day conference, which drew about 3,000 participants — mostly youth — was organized by Muslim student leaders across Toronto to address confusion within the Muslim community after the Sept. 11 attacks and to start to build bridges outward to the wider Canadian society, explained conference chair Fouzan Khan.

Organizers say they had hoped to include lecturers from other religions in the program but left it too late. Topics included "Lessons in Spiritual Fortification," "Inspirations of Faith: Following the Islamic Tradition," and "The Muslim Community — Understanding Tradition in Modern Times" by speakers such as Munir El-Kassem, acting imam of the Islamic Centre of Southwestern Ontario, Islamic Information Foundation founder Jamal Badawi and California teacher Hamza Yusuf Hanson, who was called to the White House after Sept. 11 to advise U.S. President George W. Bush. Khan said the conference will become an annual event, and next year they hope to reach beyond the Muslim community.
